Barron Park Donkeys

Previous donkeys

Perry
(circa 1994-2025)

Perry joined the pasture in March 1997.  He is famous for being the animation model for the Donkey character in Shrek movies.  In 1999, animators from Pacific Data Images, a local company contracted by Dreamworks for the 3D animation, visited the pasture and observed Perry, especially his movements and gait, to learn how donkeys move.  When Perry passed away in January 2025 people all over the world sent their condolences. Over 150 people gathered in Bol Park for his memorial to sing songs, tell stories and remember the special donkey that he was.

Jenny
(circa 1990-2020)

Jenny was brought to the pasture in 2016 as a new friend for Perry after Niner’s death. She was a desert rescue, captured by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and previously lived as the only donkey on a farm with the Vance family in Southern California. Jenny became good friends with Perry. Jenny died in November 2020.

Miner Forty-Niner
(1984-2016)

Niner’s full name was Miner Forty-Niner. He was named after the gold miners in California. Another BLM desert rescue from the Mojave Desert, Niner came to the pasture in 1998 when his previous owners moved to Colorado and became a very good friend to Perry. He was also known to unlatch the gate and escape from the pasture from time to time. He died in 2016.

Mickey (1967-1998)

Mickey, the last of the Bol family donkeys, was born July 1, 1967 and died one month after his 31st birthday on August 1, 1998. As Mickey was the first donkey that Barron Park neighbors cared for, he was the start of the Barron Park Donkey Project in 1996.
